To prevent scratches on the polished edges of glass during processing, transportation or installation, systematic management should be carried out from multiple links such as material selection, process control and operation protection.

1. Protection during processing
(1) Optimization of polishing process
Select fine-grained grinding wheels
In the final polishing stage, diamond grinding wheels with a particle size of ≥3000 mesh or cerium oxide polishing wheels are used to reduce the surface roughness (Ra≤0.01μm).
Coolant management
Use ph-neutral dedicated coolant (such as ethylene glycol solution containing rust inhibitor) to prevent residues from corroding the edges.
Polishing parameter control
Maintain the linear velocity at 15 to 25m/s and the feed velocity at no more than 0.5mm/min to prevent microcracks caused by overheating.
(2) Edge processing technology
Chamfer design
When processing, reserve a chamfer of 0.3 to 0.5mm×45° to reduce the risk of contact with sharp edges and corners.
Secondary fine polishing
Manually re-polish the polished edges with a soft felt wheel and cerium oxide powder to eliminate potential burrs.

2. Handling and storage protection
(1) Contact surface isolation
Cushion material selection
Wrap the edges with EVA foam pads (thickness ≥5mm) or silicone protective cases to prevent direct contact with metals or hard objects.
Vertical storage
The glass is tilted at 5° to 10° and placed against the A-shaped frame, with each piece separated by A PE separator (0.2mm thick).
(2) Tool improvement
Suction cup protection
Attach polyurethane buffer pads (Shore hardness 60A) to the contact edge of the vacuum suction cup.
Hoisting plan
Use nylon slings instead of steel wire ropes, with a sling width of no less than 50mm to avoid local stress.
3. Installation process protection
(1) Framework preprocessing
Slot opening cleaning
Blow out the metal shavings in the profile groove with compressed air. If necessary, stick the U-shaped PE edge guard tape.
Structural adhesive construction
First apply neutral silicone sealant (such as Dow Corning 791), then embed it into the glass to avoid hard friction.
(2) Operating norms
"Zero-contact" installation
Use guide pulleys to assist in entering the groove. Do not drag the edge of the glass.
Personnel protection
The operator must wear clean cotton gloves (gloves with sand particles are strictly prohibited).
4. Quality Inspection and Maintenance
Detection method
Inspect the edges with an LED side light meter (illuminance ≥1000lux). If the scratch depth is greater than 0.05mm, rework is required.
Regular maintenance
When stored for more than 30 days, recheck the edges and apply anti-oxidation wax (such as Renolit Gleitmittel).
5.Material alternative solutions (High-demand scenarios)
Self-healing coating
Spraying a UV-cured nano-coating (such as 3M Scotchgard) on the polished edge can repair minor scratches.
Pre-installed edge guard
Purchase finished glass with PVC edge wrapping directly (such as Saint-Gobain's Edgetech series).
