Strong
Tempered glass is approximately 4x stronger than annealed glass, or “ordinary” glass. Tempered glass gets its strength from the thermal tempering process used to manufacture tempered glass. During the quenching step (a high-pressure cooling procedure), the outer surface of the glass goes into compression. Glass in compression is about 5x less breakable than glass in tension. The end result – tempered glass that can withstand direct blows, powerful winds, and minor explosions.

Safe
Tempered glass is designed for safety. In the event that it does encounter a blow large enough to shatter it, tempered glass breaks into small granules instead of sharp shards. This safety precaution is another reason tempered glass is so widely used.

Heat-resistant
Tempered glass can withstand temperatures up to 470 degrees Fahrenheit. Because it is heat resistant, tempered glass is ideal for kitchen appliances and for use in areas that may regularly be in contact with heat.

Scratch-resistant
The thermal process that makes tempered glass so strong also makes it scratch-resistant and preserves the clarity and transparency of the glass. This is one reason car windows, phone screens, and glass doors are made of tempered glass.

Versatile
Tempered glass is available in a variety of different designs and patterns, making it perfect for use wherever glass is needed.

Application of Tempered Glass

Tempered Glass in Vehicles

The most common place you’ve probably seen tempered glass, maybe without even knowing it, is in cars and other vehicles.
Because it’s so much stronger and safer than annealed glass, tempered glass has been used to reduce the chances of injuries caused by broken glass in vehicular accidents since around the 1930s.

Tempered Glass in Commercial Buildings

The other main application of tempered glass is in all types of commercial buildings. It is used for glass doors, windows, and storefronts for added strength and to increase the safety of occupants on the inside.
Tempered glass is also used for other architectural glass, such as glass stairwells, railings, floors, and walls. Wherever there is the chance of an accidental impact or where people are in close contact with glass surfaces in commercial buildings, tempered glass is generally required.

Other Applications for Tempered Glass

Besides being widely used in vehicles and commercial architecture, tempered safety glass is used for many other day-to-day applications, including:
Phone screen/other screen protectors
Glass furniture
Microwave and convection oven doors
Other appliances
Residential skylights
Shower and tub enclosures

The Tempered Glass Manufacturing Process

01/

Raw Materials
The journey of tempered glass begins with the selection of high-quality raw materials. Silica sand, soda ash, limestone, and other additives are carefully measured and mixed to create a specific glass composition. This mixture is then melted in a furnace at high temperatures until it transforms into molten glass.

02/

Glass Forming
The molten glass is shaped into sheets through a process known as float glass manufacturing. The glass is poured onto a bath of molten tin, where it spreads and levels to create a flat and uniform surface. This method ensures the production of large, high-quality glass sheets with minimal imperfections.

03/

Cooling and Annealing
Once the glass is formed, it undergoes a controlled cooling process called annealing. This involves gradually reducing the temperature to relieve internal stresses in the glass. This step is crucial for preventing any deformation or distortion in the final product. The annealed glass is then cut into the desired size and shape.

04/

Heat Treatment
The defining characteristic of tempered glass lies in its heat treatment process. The glass is heated to a high temperature, typically around 620 degrees Celsius (1,148 degrees Fahrenheit), and then rapidly cooled using high-pressure air jets. This rapid cooling, known as quenching, creates a state of high compressive stress on the glass surface while maintaining tensile strength in the core.

05/

Surface Compression
The surface compression resulting from the quenching process is what gives tempered glass its strength and shatter-resistant properties. The outer layer of the glass is forced into compression, making it more resistant to impact and thermal stress. In the event of breakage, tempered glass fractures into small, blunt pieces rather than sharp shards, enhancing safety.

06/

Quality Inspection
Quality control is a critical step in the production of tempered glass. Each sheet undergoes rigorous inspection to ensure it meets industry standards for strength, clarity, and overall quality. Any defects or irregularities are identified and addressed to guarantee the reliability of the final product.

FAQ

Q: What not to use on tempered glass?

A: Avoid Scratching: Although tempered glass is strong, it can be easily scratched. Avoid using abrasive materials, scouring pads, or any sharp objects on the surface.

Q: Does tempered glass crack easily?

A: Tempered glass is tougher than standard annealed glass, but this doesn't mean that it should be considered impact-resistant glass. Though it can be up to five times stronger than traditional glass, tempered window glass can still be easily shattered by impacts.

Q: What is the lifespan of tempered glass?

A: Tempered glass is more resistant to impact and thermal stress than standard glass, but it can still break under extreme conditions. With proper care, tempered glass windows can last 20 to 30 years or more.

Q: What damages tempered glass?

A: Thermal Stress: One of the most common reasons for tempered glass breakage is thermal stress. This occurs when there is a significant difference in temperature between different areas of the glass. For example, direct sunlight on part of the glass while another part is in the shade can create thermal stress.

Q: Can you put hot dishes on tempered glass?

A: While tempered glass is more resistant to heat than standard glass, it's not completely impenetrable. Extreme and sudden temperature changes, like placing a hot pot directly on the surface, will still cause cracking and stress.
