Shatter Proof Glass

"shatter proof glass" usually refers to safety glass. When this kind of glass is impacted or broken, its fragments are less likely to fly and hurt people, or it can maintain a certain degree of integrity, greatly reducing the risk of personal injury. It is not completely unbreakable, but rather "breaks more safely".

Principle: It is made by bonding two or more layers of glass (which can be ordinary glass, tempered glass or semi-tempered glass) with one or more layers of tough and transparent plastic interlayer film (commonly PVB, SGP, EVA, etc.) in between through high-temperature and high-pressure processes.

Breaking characteristics: When the glass layer is impacted and breaks, the fragments will be firmly adhered by the tough interlayer film and basically will not fly or fall off. Glass may develop cracks, but it will maintain its integrity, forming a "spider web" pattern of cracks, and will not fall off or leave large holes (unless the impact force is extremely huge).

Advantage & Disadvantage

Advantages

• Extremely high safety: No debris splashes, preventing people from being cut or objects from penetrating.
• Maintain integrity: Even if it breaks, it can still provide a certain barrier function (wind protection, rain protection, and prevention of temporary burglary).
• Anti-theft and explosion-proof performance: Increasing the number and thickness of the intermediate film layers can significantly enhance the impact resistance, achieving anti-crushing, anti-theft, and even bulletproof/explosion-proof levels.
• Sound insulation and noise reduction: The interlayer film can effectively absorb sound waves, and its sound insulation effect is superior to that of ordinary glass.
• Uv protection: The intermediate film can filter out most of the ultraviolet rays.

Disadvantage

• Higher cost: More expensive than tempered glass and ordinary glass.
• Greater weight: The multi-layer structure and interlayer film make it heavier.
• Edge treatment: The edges need to be protected to prevent moisture from entering and causing delamination.
• Applications: Building skylights, skylights, curtain walls, bank counters, shop Windows, hurricane-resistant doors and Windows, car front windshields (as required by regulations), museum display cases, indoor partitions or railings with a risk of falling, etc.

How to Choose "Shatter proof Glass"

The top priority is safety:

Are you most afraid of being injured by flying fragments? Tempered glass (high cost performance) or laminated glass (highest safety).

Is it necessary that even if it breaks, it won't fall down/won't let in wind or rain/and can prevent thieves from reaching out at the last minute? Laminated glass.

Do you have the need for anti-theft and explosion-proof? High-strength laminated glass (bulletproof/anti-theft glass).

Consider the application scenarios

Shower enclosures, interior partitions, furniture countertops, ordinary doors and Windows → tempered glass (the most common and economical).

Skylights, skylights, balcony railing glass, large floor-to-ceiling Windows for families with children, low-floor Windows, hurricane-resistant areas → laminated glass (safer and more reliable).

Shop Windows, bank counters → laminated glass (basic protection) or bulletproof/anti-theft glass (high protection).

Curtain wall (non-critical safety area and flatness is pursued) → Semi-tempered glass (note that its safety grade is not high enough to be used alone in high-risk positions).

Note

The core of "anti-shattering" is "breaking safely". Tempered glass achieves safety by breaking into small particles, while laminated glass maintains its integrity by holding the fragments together.

Installation is as important as the framework. No matter how good the safety glass is, if it is installed on a fragile or inappropriate frame, its overall safety will be greatly reduced.

Check the certification mark. Formal safety glass products should have clear markings (such as the CCC certification mark and the word "Tempered" for tempered glass, the CCC certification mark for laminated glass, etc.).
