Which Has A More Durable Paint Surface, Digital Printed Glass Or Silk-screen Printed Glass?

The paint surface firmness of digital printed glass is usually better than that of silk-screen printed glass, but its advantages mainly lie in adhesion and pattern complexity. Physical strengths such as wear resistance depend on specific processes and subsequent treatments.

Comparison of process principles

Silk-screen printed glass: It belongs to the traditional contact printing.

Process: Through a patterned silk screen, the ink is "scraped" onto the glass surface with a scraper. Ink accumulates on the surface, forming a relatively thick ink layer.

Curing: It is usually high-temperature tempering (firing), and the ink fuses with the glass surface at the glass softening temperature (about 600-700℃), with strong adhesion.

Digital printed glass: It belongs to modern non-contact printing.

Process: Similar to large inkjet printers, it precisely sprays specially made ink (usually UV ink or ceramic ink) onto the glass surface.

Curing

UV ink: It cures instantaneously through ultraviolet radiation, which belongs to physical and chemical curing, and the ink layer adheres to the surface.

Ceramic ink (high-temperature sintering) : After printing, it needs to undergo high-temperature tempering treatment. The inorganic pigments in the ink fuse with the glass, achieving the highest firmness.

Core advantages and applicable scenarios

Silk-screened glass

Advantages: Mature technology, relatively low cost, high efficiency in large-area single-color or spot color printing, stable performance after high-temperature sintering, and a reliable choice for traditional building curtain walls and home appliance glass.

Weakness in firmness: Poor performance in complex gradients and high-definition patterns; The ink layer is relatively thick. If not handled properly, there may be jagged edges or uniformity issues.

Digital printed glass

Advantage (revolutionary) :

Pattern capability: It can achieve photo-level precision, infinite gradients, and any complex patterns, which is incomparable to screen printing.

The essence of adhesion: Especially for digital printing glass that uses ceramic ink and undergoes high-temperature sintering, the degree of fusion between the ink and the glass can be made finer and more uniform than that of screen printing. Therefore, from a microscopic perspective, its adhesion may be better. It combines the precision of digital technology with the firmness of high-temperature sintering.

Non-contact: It does not exert stress on the glass and can be used for ultra-thin and irregular-shaped glass.

The shortcoming of firmness: UV-cured digital printing is mainly used indoors, and its firmness is designed for indoor environments. Long-term outdoor use is prone to aging and peeling. This is the most easily confused point.

Summary

If the comparison is made for outdoor use or products that require high durability (such as building curtain walls and exterior wall decoration), the paint surface firmness of digital printing glass sintered at high temperatures is greater than that of traditional silk-screened glass, and it also outperforms traditional silk-screened glass in terms of pattern fineness.

06

If the comparison is between UV digital printing and traditional screen printing, the long-term durability and chemical stability of screen printing are usually superior to those of UV digital printing. UV printing is more suitable for interior decoration, partitions, art glass, etc.

The most crucial thing is to distinguish the type of ink and curing process for digital printing. When purchasing or specifying, be sure to ask clearly whether it is "UV printing" or "high-temperature sintering printing (ceramic ink)".

Suggestion

For outdoor engineering and high-standard projects, high-temperature sintered digital printing glass or traditional silk-screen printing glass should be given priority.

For interior creative decoration and personalized customization, UV digital printing is an economical and aesthetically pleasing choice.
