What Is Window Insulated Glass?
Window insulated glass is a glass product composed of two or more layers of glass through a spacer strip and a sealant, forming a dry air layer or an inert gas layer (such as argon) in the middle. It combines the thermal insulation and sound insulation performance of insulating glass with the high strength and safety of tempered glass, and is widely used in residential, office buildings, commercial buildings and other places, and is an ideal choice for modern window design with both functionality and energy saving.
Key parameters and technologies
Glass thickness: Common original sheet thicknesses include 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, etc. The thicker the glass is, the better its strength and sound insulation are generally, but its weight also increases.
The thickness of the hollow layer (the width of the spacer bar) : Common ones include 6A, 9A, 12A, 15A, 16A, 20A, etc. (A represents the Air layer Air). 12A-16A is usually a better choice for insulation and cost-effectiveness. The effect is not obvious if it is too thin (<6mm). If it is too thick (>20mm), the heat insulation effect may be reduced instead due to enhanced air convection.
Spacer bar type
Traditional aluminum spacers: They are low in cost and widely used, but metals have good thermal conductivity and act as thermal Bridges. Their edge insulation performance is relatively poor, which can easily lead to condensation at the edges.
Warm-edge spacer bars: Made of stainless steel or composite materials (such as stainless steel + polypropylene), their thermal conductivity is much lower than that of aluminum, effectively reducing edge thermal Bridges, enhancing the overall insulation performance of the window, and lowering the risk of edge condensation. They are the preferred choice for energy-saving doors and Windows.
Filling gas
Air: The most common, the lowest cost, and has a certain heat insulation effect.
Inert gases (Argon is the most common and Krypton is Krypton) : They have a lower thermal conductivity than air and can significantly enhance the insulation performance of insulating glass (with a lower U value). Argon gas is cost-effective and widely used. Krypton gas has a better effect but a higher cost, and is mostly used in ultra-low energy consumption buildings. Inert gases will leak slowly over time (high-quality seals can slow this down), and a good sealing system is required.
Low-E glass (low-emissivity coated glass)
A special film of metal or metal oxide is coated on the inner surface of a piece of glass in insulating glass (the side facing the insulating layer).
Core function: Under the premise of ensuring good light transmittance, selectively reflect far-infrared thermal radiation.
In winter: Reflect the heat from the indoor heating back into the room to reduce heat loss.
In summer: Reflect the solar heat radiation from outside back to reduce the entry of heat.
It is one of the most crucial technologies for significantly enhancing the energy-saving performance of insulating glass, especially in reducing the U value. Common types include single-silver Low-E, double-silver Low-E, and triple-silver Low-E (with increasing energy-saving effects and costs).
Sealing system
Double sealing is usually adopted: the first layer is butyl rubber (with excellent air tightness and water vapor penetration prevention); The second layer of silicone sealant or polysulfide sealant (with high structural strength and good weather resistance). The sealing quality directly determines the service life and performance stability of insulating glass (whether it fails due to air or water ingress).
Future technological trendsVacuum composite hollow
0.3mm vacuum layer +12A hollow → U value exceeds 0.4
Photovoltaic power generation glass
Transparent perovskite battery (with a light transmittance of 30%) → Annual power generation of 55kWh/㎡
Smart dimming glass
Electrochromic /PDLC technology → Dynamic adjustment of light transmittance from 10% to 80%
Selection and Precautions:
Clarify the requirements of window insulated glass: Is the primary consideration energy conservation (insulation/heat preservation), sound insulation, safety or condensation prevention? Different demands have different focuses.
Climate conditions: In extremely cold regions, the focus is on heat preservation (Low U value), while in hot regions, the emphasis is on heat insulation (low solar heat gain coefficient SHGC). At the same time, attention should be paid to the selection of LOW-E film systems (high transparency type, shading type).
Matching window frames: High-performance insulating glass needs to be matched with equally high-performance window frame profiles (such as thermal break aluminum, plastic-steel, wood-aluminum composite, etc.) and good installation techniques to achieve the best effect. Poor-quality window frames can become a performance shortcoming.
Pay attention to sealing and brand: Choose products from manufacturers with good reputation and standardized craftsmanship to ensure sealing quality and service life (qualified ones should reach more than 15 years).
Consider cost-effectiveness: High-performance configurations are more costly and need to be comprehensively weighed based on the budget and long-term energy-saving benefits (electricity bill savings). Generally speaking, double-glass Low-E+ argon gas + warm edge has a relatively good cost performance in most regions.
Characteristic Specification
Insulation performance: The hollow layer reduces heat transfer, reducing the energy consumption of air conditioning in summer and heating in winter (energy saving rate can reach more than 30%).
Sound insulation performance: The hollow layer effectively reduces noise (noise reduction can reach 30~40dB) and improves indoor quiet.
The impact resistance of high-strength tempered glass is 3-5 times that of ordinary glass, which is suitable for scenes with high safety requirements.
After crushing, it is obtuse particles to reduce the damage to the human body (in line with GB 15763.2 standard).
The anti-condensation hollow layer reduces the temperature difference between inside and outside and reduces condensation formation.
Weather resistance: UV resistance, poor temperature resistance (-40℃~200℃), suitable for long-term outdoor use.
